The short answer
Shopify does not natively let you password protect a single product, page, or collection. The native password feature under Online Store > Preferences locks your entire storefront behind one password. It's all or nothing.
But you can add this with an app. Schedule It includes page locks: a password gate you can put on any individual product, page, or collection while the rest of your store stays open. And because it's Schedule It, you can lock and unlock on a timer, so the gate lifts at your launch minute on its own.
What Shopify's password protection actually covers
Shopify's storefront password blocks every visitor from every page until they enter the password you set. That includes:
- Your homepage
- All product pages
- All collection pages
- Your cart and checkout (visitors can't get that far anyway)
There's no setting to whitelist certain pages or apply the password to just one collection. It's a store-wide switch, on or off. And one more limit worth knowing: Shopify doesn't allow third-party apps to flip that store-wide switch either. The only tool that can schedule it is Shopify's own Launchpad, which requires Shopify Plus.
This is different from Shopify's "restricted access" apps for wholesale or B2B gating, which use separate app logic to show different catalogs to different customer groups. That's a bigger setup than a simple password screen.
Password protect a single product, page, or collection
Schedule It's page locks put a password screen on exactly the pages you choose:
- Install Schedule It and enable its theme app embed (one toggle in the theme editor, no code).
- Create a lock for the product, page, or collection you want to gate, and set its password and the message visitors see.
- Share the password with the people who should get in: VIP list, press, wholesale buyers, your team.
Visitors without the password see the gate. Everyone else shops the rest of your store normally.
The scheduling part is where it gets useful for launches. Add a lock or unlock action to an automation and the gate flips at an exact date and time. Set an end time and it auto-reverts, so a VIP early-access window can open at 6 PM and re-lock at midnight without anyone touching a keyboard.
What visibility tools solve instead
Sometimes you don't need a password, you just need the thing hidden. Visibility is a cleaner block when nobody should see the page at all:
For a single product: unpublish it, or use Shopify's native Schedule availability setting on the product to set a future publish date. An unpublished product has no live page at all.
For a page: unpublish the page from the Online Store > Pages list. Pages don't have a native scheduler, so you'll need to publish it manually or with a scheduling tool when the time comes.
For a collection: there's no native scheduler here either, but Schedule It can publish or unpublish the collection itself on a timer. You can also control what's inside it: build the collection as an automated collection with a rule like "tagged: launch-ready," then add or remove that tag from products on a schedule, and products fall in and out automatically.
Where scheduling actually helps
You can schedule every piece of the "hidden until launch" pattern:
- Page locks on and off, so a gated product, page, or collection opens to the public at an exact time and can re-lock when the window closes
- Product publish and unpublish, so a product goes live (or comes down) at an exact time without you clicking a button
- Product tags, so items enter or exit tag-based collections automatically
Schedule It handles all three from one dashboard. You set the action and the time, and it runs even if you're not near a laptop. It also logs every run so you can confirm the lock lifted (or the product went live) exactly when it should have.
If your goal is a "coming soon" launch, combine a scheduled unlock with a scheduled product publish and a tag change that adds the product to your featured collection at the same moment. One automation, full reveal.
A realistic launch sequence
Here's how a hidden-until-launch product actually plays out for most merchants:
- Build the product, leave it unpublished (or set a schedule availability date if you're only using one channel).
- Tag it something like
holdso it stays out of your automated collections. - Lock the landing page or collection for the drop, and share the password with your early-access list.
- On launch morning, schedule one automation: unlock the page, publish the product, and swap the tag from
holdtonew-arrivals.
Because scheduling runs on your store's timezone, double check that setting before you trust the countdown, especially if your team is spread across regions.
