Timing a product to go live at a set moment is one of the most useful things you can do on Shopify, and a lot of merchants do not realize the platform already handles part of it for you. Shopify has a built-in scheduled publish date. It works well for one thing and stops short on a few others.
This guide covers the native way first, so you are not paying for something you already have. Then it covers the gaps, because that is where launches actually go wrong.
Schedule a product with Shopify's built-in publish date
Shopify lets you set a future date and time for a product to become available on a sales channel. When that moment arrives, Shopify publishes it for you. No app required.
- Open Products and click the product you want to time.
- Find the Publishing card (or the sales channel availability section, depending on your admin version).
- Next to the Online Store channel, click the calendar icon and choose Schedule availability.
- Set the date and time you want the product to go live.
- Click Save.
That is it. The product stays hidden until your chosen time, then Shopify makes it available on that channel automatically.
Scheduled publishing runs on your store's timezone, not the customer's. Check Settings > General if you are not sure what your store is set to, especially before a midnight drop.
Where Shopify's built-in scheduling stops
The native publish date is genuinely useful, but it only solves half of a real launch. Here is what it does not do.
- It only schedules the product going up. There is no built-in setting to schedule the same product to come back down at an end time. If a drop is meant to sell for 48 hours and then disappear, you are back in the admin at the end doing it by hand.
- It is one product at a time. If you are launching a full collection of 30 items at the same minute, you set the schedule on each product individually. There is no bulk "publish all of these at 12:00" in the standard flow.
- It does not coordinate with anything else. A real launch is rarely just a product going live. It is the product, plus a price, plus maybe a discount, plus an announcement bar. The native tool schedules the product and nothing around it.
- There is no reusable setup. If you run the same kind of drop every month, you rebuild the schedule from scratch each time.
None of this means the built-in tool is bad. It just means it was built to publish a product, not to run a launch.
Schedule a launch that also ends, with Schedule It
This is the part Schedule It was built for. Instead of a one-way publish date, you set a start and an end, and you can attach other store changes to the same moment.
- Install Schedule It from the Shopify App Store and open it in your admin.
- Create a new automation and add a Product publish action.
- Pick the product or products and the sales channel.
- Set the start time. This is when everything goes live.
- Add an end time if the drop should come down on its own. At that point Schedule It unpublishes the product for you.
- Optional: add a price change, a discount, or an announcement bar to the same automation so the whole launch fires together.
Because you set the end when you set the start, you never have to remember to pull a product after a limited run. It handles itself.
Turn on auto-revert and set an end time on any temporary change. Prices, discounts, and product visibility all roll back to where they were before the launch, so nothing stays live past your window.

Use Shopify's built-in publish date when you are launching a single product, it only needs to go up, and nothing else has to change at the same time.
